D'Banj

D’Banj, also known as Koko Master, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter and harmonica player from Zaria in Kaduna State, Nigeria. He is born Dapo Daniel Oyebanjo. His stage name combines parts of his first name and surname.

Early life and background

He is raised in Nigeria and also spends part of his childhood abroad in India because of his father’s work as an artillery officer. He comes from a family with connections to Shagamu in Ogun State. At 11, he is sent to the Nigerian Military School with expectations that he will follow his father into the military. He is introduced to the harmonica at 14 by his late brother, who dies in a plane crash at 17. D’Banj teaches himself the instrument and becomes known for his harmonica playing.

Music career

D’Banj performs in Yoruba, English and Pidgin English. He appears as a guest at JJC & 419 Squad shows, including WOMAD Rivermead, and he records with artists including Ruggedman, SID and JJC & 419 Squad. He also performs alongside international artists in Nigeria, including Jay-Z, Beyoncé, Missy Elliott, Ja Rule and Beenie Man.

His first album, No Long Thing, is produced by Don Jazzy and includes the tracks “Tongolo”, “Mobo Lowo Won”, “All the Way”, “Socor” and “Airborne”. “All the Way” reflects the tensions he faces with his parents over his choice of career. His music draws on Afrobeat with a juju edge, and he grows up listening to Fela Kuti, whom he describes as a mentor. He performs at Femi Kuti’s Afrikan Shrine in Lagos, at Shrine Synchro System’s regular London night at Cargo, and at the Black President Concert at the Barbican in London.

Awards and recognition

D’Banj wins Best African Act at the 2007 MTV Europe Music Awards, Artist of the Year at the 2008 and 2009 MTV Africa Music Awards, and Best International Act: Africa at the 2011 BET Awards.
