David's Lyre
David's Lyre is the alias of Paul Dixon, an English singer and guitarist from London. He takes the name while studying at university in Manchester, where it references the biblical King David and the lyre. Dixon performs with acoustic and electric guitar, and also plays the WEM CopyCat, autoharp, marxophone and omnichord.
Early attention
By 2010, David's Lyre receives attention for cover versions, including Ellie Goulding songs, and for remixes of other artists. He also remixes work by Marina and the Diamonds and Everything Everything, and receives remixes from The Last Skeptik and JaKwob. In the same year, The Guardian features him as its New Band of the Day.
Releases
His debut EP, In Arms EP, appears in 2011. It draws a comparison with Patrick Wolf for its combination of folk and electronic instruments, and the track "In Arms" has an accompanying music video made with short-film animation. His first full-length album, Picture Of Our Youth, is self-released through Bandcamp in 2012. The album receives a 3.5 out of 5 review from musicOMH and an 8/10 review from Drowned in Sound.
Career decisions
Dixon signs a major-label record contract in 2010, but chooses not to follow the standard release model. The contract expires at the end of 2011 without an album being issued under it. In January 2012, he says Picture Of Our Youth is the last album he issues under the David's Lyre name and that he moves on to solo touring with Spector.
