David Van Day is a singer and television personality from Brighton, England, born in 1957. He starts out as a child performer, appearing on stage and screen from the age of ten, including work in Oliver, television commercials for Coca-Cola and Clarks shoes, and the horror film Do You Believe in Fairies. He later wins a scholarship to Italia Conti, where he initially focuses more on acting than singing.
Music career
Van Day first finds success with the pop group Guys ’n’ Dolls, who achieve chart success in the UK and Europe. While in that group, he meets singer Thereza Bazar, and the pair leave to form Dollar in 1978.
Dollar becomes one of the best-known pop duos of the late 1970s and 1980s. Their hit singles include Shooting Star, I Wanna Hold Your Hand, Hand Held in Black and White, Mirror Mirror, Give Me Back My Heart, Videotheque and O L'Amour, which is their last UK Top 10 hit in 1988. In a Channel 4 television ranking of best duets, Dollar place fifth, ahead of acts such as Ike & Tina Turner and Donny & Marie Osmond.
After Dollar split in 1988, Van Day takes part in several reunions, including Reborn in the USA, the eighties revival tour Hear & Now, a tribute concert for producer Trevor Horn at Wembley Arena, and Pop Goes The Band on Living TV.
