David Stone is a Canadian musician from southern Ontario. He is an acoustic bass player and also plays saxophone, guitar, drums, piano and harmonica.
Early life and background
He is born in Barrie, Ontario, and grows up just north of the city before moving back there at nineteen. His early interests include camping, canoeing, mountain biking and snowboarding, and he also plays goaltender in hockey with hopes of playing professionally. He grows up listening to a wide range of music, including Metallica, Björk, Bob Marley, Alice in Chains, the Clash, Stiff Little Fingers, Rush, The Tragically Hip and Neil Young.
Musical development
Stone starts on saxophone at about eleven and takes up guitar at around twelve after receiving an acoustic guitar for Christmas. He later learns bass, drums, piano and harmonica. While at high school, he performs in several groups, including choirs and punk bands.
At about sixteen, he writes “Ashes” and “Foot Prints”, which he regards as the start of his solo project. By seventeen, he is recording his own music at home in a setup he names A Stones Throw Studio.
Solo work
After graduating, he pauses his solo material for a period and joins a metal band, gaining his first experience as a touring musician. After that band breaks up, he returns to his own recordings and issues the Ashes EP, a set of seven original songs recorded and produced at A Stones Throw Studio.
He follows this with the Hollow Heart EP, which contains six further original songs, again recorded and produced at A Stones Throw Studio. He later releases the Hemp Cord Demo, another collection of seven original songs that represents a midpoint toward a planned full-length album.
Style and affiliations
His music is associated with ambient, pop, experimental, electronic and dark ambient styles.
