David Rovics
David Rovics is a United States singer-songwriter from New York, born in 1967. He works in folk, folk punk and hopepunk, and his songs are rooted in protest folk.
His writing focuses on topical political subjects, including the 2003 Iraq war, anti-globalisation and social justice. He presents himself as an outspoken grassroots political protest singer and criticises George W. Bush, John Kerry and the Democratic Party. He also speaks about these views on stage, in radio appearances and in press material.
Rovics is not closely tied to any single political or ideological movement. His lyrics and interviews range across left-wing and humanitarian concerns, and he frames his music as a way to spread those ideas. His work is often compared with the tradition of Woody Guthrie and Phil Ochs.
