David E. Sugar, also known as David Sugar, is a UK electronic artist, singer, songwriter and producer associated with chip-tune, 8-bit, chiptune, electronica and synthpop. He is credited with helping to pioneer chip-tune using a Nintendo Game Boy and other toy instruments such as a Speak & Spell, drawing on the sound of early computer game music.

Career

David E. Sugar is active on the UK underground scene and records as a solo artist, with live performances that also involve a band. He is a member of 8-Bit Operators. His music appears on labels including Sunday Best, Kitsuné and Greco-Roman.

He signs to Rob da Bank’s Sunday Best label after earlier releasing music on Kitsuné, where To Yourself appears on Kitsuné Maison 5 and Although You May Laugh appears on Kitsuné Maison 6. His single Oi New York, This Is London helps launch Joe Hot Chip’s Greco-Roman label.

Releases

Memory Store is his debut album, and Although You May Laugh features on it. Party Killer is issued as a double A-side 7-inch with the non-album track Travel Light, with digital versions including remixes by Disco of Doom, Adam Smith, The Phenomenal Hand Clap Band, Renaissance Man and Sunday Best’s own rework.

Touring and reception

He tours internationally with artists including Calvin Harris, Digitalism, Hadouken and Deadmau5. His work receives support from radio presenters Zane Lowe, Jon Hillcock, Kissy Sellout, Eddie Temple-Morris and Joe Ransom, as well as DJs Jesse Rose, Hot Chip, Tom Findlay of Groove Armada, Sinden and Hervé.
