Daughters
Daughters are an American band from Providence, Rhode Island, formed in 2002 after the break-up of As the Sun Sets. They are active from 2002 to the present and are described across their career through several overlapping genres, including experimental, grindcore, math rock, mathcore, noisecore, sasscore and noise rock. The group is associated with the US mathcore and noise rock scene.
Style and development
The band’s early recordings are primarily described as grindcore and mathgrind, while later material is described as noise rock. Nicholas Andrew Sadler has said he does not agree with the band being labelled math rock or mathcore, arguing that their music is more calculated than classically trained, rather than fitting a strict math rock framework. The band’s sound changes noticeably over time, moving from high-pitched screaming to a more melodic vocal approach.
Line-up
The current line-up consists of vocalist Alexis S.F. Marshall, guitarist Nicholas Andrew Sadler, drummer Jon Syverson and bassist Samuel Moorehouse Walker. Other members associated with the group include Jeremy Wabiszczewicz, Pat Masterson, Perri Peet and Brent Frattini. Wabiszczewicz later directs the band’s first music video.
Reformation and later activity
Daughters reform for one show in Rhode Island in September 2013, with a second show added shortly afterwards due to demand. After that, the band records demos and material in Providence, including sessions at Machines With Magnets in 2014 and again in 2015, although the 2014 recordings are shelved. In 2016 the band says it will record again during tour, and they play a new song, “Long Road, No Turns”.
Releases and label work
In 2018 the band releases the single “Satan in the Wait” through Ipecac Records, followed by “The Reason They Hate Me” and “Long Road, No Turns”. Their fourth studio album, You Won’t Get What You Want, is then announced. In 2019 they release their first music video, for “Less Sex”, directed by Jeremy Wabiszczewicz.
Other notes
Alexis S.F. Marshall’s vocal style on Hell Songs draws comparison to David Yow, Nick Cave and Michael Gira, and has also been described with comparisons to Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis. In 2021 the band announces that it is pausing activity for the immediate future and cancels scheduled January 2022 shows.
