DataLine is the experimental electronic project of Cenk Sayinli, also known as Jake. He begins making music through a Commodore 64 and later builds his own sound around hardware sequencers and drum machines.

History

DataLine starts as a solo project in the early 1990s while Sayinli lives in Istanbul. After moving back to the UK, he works with Elektron Music Machines and performs live wherever possible. His setup centres on Elektron hardware, especially the Machinedrum and Monomachine, and later also the Octatrack, combined with the OP-1 from Teenage Engineering.

He plays many gigs across Europe using only the Monomachine and Machinedrum, and performs alongside acts including Vector Lovers and Daedelus. During his time in the UK, he becomes a resident performer at LaptopLounge, an electronic music night in Edinburgh. The same organisers later launch Electric Café, a live electronic event held at The Institute gallery every second Sunday.

Releases and projects

DataLine takes part in Weekly Beats from the beginning of 2012, contributing a new track each Sunday during the project. On the NOORDEN label from Cologne, Germany, he appears on the OP-1-only compilation Rumble When Bumble with the track “Her Tune”. The label also releases the debut EP See You I, available on Bandcamp, and the album Hear Your Beat.

Style

His work is described as electronic music made with Elektron Music Machines, with an experimental focus. DataLine continues to work on performances combining the Machinedrum, Monomachine, Octatrack and OP-1.
