Dark Shadow is a melodic black metal band from India, formed in 2002. The group begins with percussionist Abaddon and guitarist Akkahr, and later adds vocalist Typhoon, lead guitarist Nezzar and bassist Shadow. Keyboard player Borenigma joins soon after, and the line-up changes several times over the following years as members leave and are replaced.

Line-up and membership

The band’s listed line-up includes Nezzar on lead guitar, Akkahr on guitar, Shadow on bass, Abaddon on drums and Seelenheil on vocals. Earlier singers include Typhoon, who leaves in February 2004 for personal and musical reasons, and Reghrav, who later takes over vocals before leaving to focus on Bloody Blasphemy. Appolyon then becomes the frontman, while Hysteria joins on keyboards after Borenigma leaves; Hysteria had previously played with Atritas. The later line-up also includes a vocalist referred to as “soul intact”.

Career

Dark Shadow gives its first concert at the Loco-club in Biel on 25 January 2003, playing five songs. The band continues with performances through spring 2003 and plays further shows outside its home region before the end of that year. Positive audience response leads it to record a demo in August 2003, with four tracks laid down at Cryptic Voice.

In 2004, after Typhoon leaves, the band decides to record an album, but line-up instability slows progress. Nezzar is away for military service and Shadow is often working abroad, while Borenigma later leaves after contributing heavily to songwriting and keyboard parts. After a quieter period with few songs and few live appearances, the band continues writing material and works toward a second long-player.
