Dar Williams

Dar Williams is an American singer-songwriter from Mount Kisco, in the United States. Born in 1967, she works in folk and singer-songwriter music and releases recordings on Dar Williams Records.

Her songs sit at the intersection of folk and pop, with blues, rock and jazz also shaping her sound. She has been writing and performing for more than a decade, and her work is known for combining acoustic songcraft with an organic feel.

Albums and themes

Williams’ album My Better Self addresses American politics, the disillusionment and apathy of youth, and the female experience. Her 2008 album Promised Land explores relationships, religion, gender, nature and other personal and social themes. Her 2012 album In the Time of the Gods uses Greek mythology as a central thread.

Songwriting

One of her songs, “You Will Ride With Me Tonight,” is said to have come from an idea she had while driving on an isolated highway on a trip from New York to Ontario.
