Dansette Junior

Dansette Junior is a London electronic act formed by singer, producer and songwriter Will Hunts under his Dansette Junior alias, with Johnny Mac on synths and Graham Gaffney on drums and machines. The group comes together after a chance meeting on the High Road in Kentish Town, North London, and works in a mix of electro pop, dubstep and drum and bass-inflected electronic music.

Style and early releases

The act is associated with twisted comedy lyrics, analogue synths, computer-based production and energetic live performance. Its first release, Drums and Bass, draws attention for combining hypnotic, comedy-led lyrics with electronic textures and became a cult favourite. The track also helps define the group’s blend of edgy electro pop and bass-heavy club influences.

Career and collaboration

Dansette Junior signs to Columbia Records through Sony Music after the label responds to its sound. Dance artist Calvin Harris notices the group and invites it to support him on his arena tour across the UK and Europe in 2009. For its debut album, the trio works with producers Dub n Segs, who are associated with the Chemical Brothers and Alabama 3.

Reception

The act receives radio support from Steve Lamacq on BBC Radio 1, and is described in the press as a London trio with strong live presence and distinctive vocals. Its music is framed as playful but forceful, with a style that combines electronic songcraft, humour and high-energy performance.
