Danny Red

Danny Red is a UK reggae musician and singer, known for roots reggae. He begins his recording career in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1983 with songs including “Who Seh Jah Jah”, “Blackness Awareness” and “Duppy Conqueror”. He later finds his strongest success in the UK roots scene in the early 1990s and becomes a major figure there.

Career

Danny Red is mentored in Rastafari by Mortimer “Bro Cummie” Planno, Sam Brown, Jah Bones and Ras Xylon, all of whom play a part in encouraging his music. His work is rooted in the Jamaican and UK reggae traditions, and he records in Jamaica, the United States and the United Kingdom.

He is voted best roots artist in 1994 and 1995. In 1995 he becomes the first roots artist signed to Columbia Records for 25 years.

Throughout his career, Danny Red works and tours with a wide range of reggae and related artists, including Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs, Freddie McGregor, Anthony Johnson, Nitty Gritty, Earl Sixteen, Horace Andy, Daddy Freddie, Starkey Banton, Top Cat, Gospel Fish, DJ Muggs, Joseph Cotton, Soul II Soul, Prince Lincoln, Twinkle Brothers, Johnny Osbourne, Blaka T, JR Frost, Lucky Dube, Half Pint, Shinehead, Lloyd Brown, Vivian Jones, Lidj Inc, Phillip Frazer and Little Kirk.

He also works with producers Manasseh, Gussie P and Mafia & Fluxy, and releases music on his own label, Ababajanoi.
