Danny Daze is the performance name of Daniel Gomez, a US DJ, producer and label owner from Miami. He works across bassline, breakbeat, breaks, club, dance, deep house, house and techno, with a strong focus on experimental electronic music.

Background

Raised in Miami, Gomez starts DJing at raves at the age of 13. He adopts the Daze name early on, after his mother suggests it. By the age of 14, he is playing weddings and using the money to buy vinyl for his DJ work.

His sound is shaped by Miami’s B-boy culture, classic electro, Miami bass, Detroit techno and the Dutch electro scene of the 1990s. He also draws on his Cuban background, which feeds into the Latin elements heard in some of his music and DJ sets. Among his wider influences are Giorgio Moroder, Anthony Rother, Detroit techno and Italo disco.

Production and labels

He begins producing in 2004 using Fruity Loops and also starts the electro-techno white label Omniamm that same year. His label work continues through Omnidisc, which reflects his preference for raw, unpolished records and a risk-taking approach to curation.

His releases appear on Kompakt’s Speicher series, and he also issues remixes for Phantasy, Comeme and Monkeytown, among others.

DJ style and work outside club music

As a DJ, Daze is known for long sets that move between Electro, Techno and Italo Disco, and he sometimes includes unexpected selections such as Yazoo or Paula Abdul. His sets and productions favour surprise, improvisation and detailed sound design.

He also creates original runway soundtracks, including work for the American streetwear designer John Elliott and the Australian brand Song for the Mute. In addition, he works on projects that include a recognisable noise for a MacBook and music for fashion advertising.

Artistic identity

Daze presents his work under the same name in different contexts, with Daniel Gomez and Danny Daze describing the same approach. His output is defined by a deliberately experimental method, combining club music with sound design and a broad range of electronic influences.
