Daniela Brooker
Daniela Brooker is a London singer and songwriter who starts writing songs at the age of 12 and records her first material by 13. She grows up in a family with strong musical influences and describes a childhood shaped by music from rock, R&B, hip hop, pop and Latin styles. Her father plays artists such as Aerosmith, Queen, AC/DC and Tupac Shakur, while her Venezuelan mother listens to Fleetwood Mac, Prince and Latin music. Brooker is a fluent Spanish speaker and speaks Spanish at home, and she often includes Spanish-language songs in her live sets.
Brooker’s first song is called Summertime, and she begins performing and recording while still very young. By 15, she is spending time in a studio complex in Hackney, working with different producers and trying to shape her sound. She is determined to build her career on her own terms rather than through a talent show route, and she secures industry contacts including a concert booking agent, a US publicist and a lawyer.
Her songwriting during her teenage years moves between jazz, rock and pop before settling into a more developed style. She has a rich, expressive and soulful voice, and she says she needs to work harder on songwriting than on singing. She is the middle of three children, and her family has strong ties to Venezuela: her parents meet when her father’s family hosts foreign students, her mother returns to South America after studying in England, and the couple later live in Caracas before moving back to England. Brooker also says she plans to record a full Spanish-language version of her debut album.
