Dananananaykroyd
Dananananaykroyd are an indie rock band from Glasgow, Scotland, active from 2006 to 2011. Their lineup changes around the group’s early releases are part of their history, with the final line-up including Calum Gunn, Duncan Robertson, David Roy, Ryan McGinness, John Baillie Jr. and Paul Carlin.
Formation and early releases
The band forms in Glasgow in 2006. Their first two singles are limited edition 7-inch releases: “Totally Bone” comes out on Moshi Moshi, and “Some Dresses” appears on Jealous Records. A Japan-only CD EP later collects both singles on Klee/Rallye Records.
Original singer Giles Bailey leaves after those first two singles and is replaced by Calum Gunn. John Baillie Jr. joins on drums and additional lead vocals.
EPs, album and label history
Dananananaykroyd release their first EP, Sissy Hits, on Holy Roar Records in June 2008. After that, they bring in Paul Carlin as an additional drummer following James Hamilton’s departure. The band then signs to Best Before Records and records its debut full-length album, Hey Everyone!, in the United States with producer Machine.
Line-up changes and live activity
Bassist Laura Hyde leaves the band in June 2009 and is replaced on tour by Ryan McGinness. The group tours the UK with acts including Foals and completes a European tour with Kaiser Chiefs in 2009. They also play Reading and Leeds Festivals in August 2009.
During a show in Sydney in August 2009, John Baillie Jr. injures his arm after jumping off stage, which leads to the cancellation of the remainder of the Australian tour and appearances at Pukkelpop and Belladrum. The band later returns to Sydney to perform at the Annandale Hotel in July 2011, two years after the accident.
Break-up and later projects
The group announces its split in September 2011. After the band ends, some former members form Alarm Bells. Calum Gunn joins Her Parents, and John Baillie Jr. takes on production work for the pop project Bossy Love.
