Dana Dentata

Dana Dentata is a Toronto-based rapper, singer and performer whose work combines trap metal, hip-hop, horrorcore, industrial hip-hop and rap rock. She grows out of an earlier punk-metal project called Dentata, and later records under her own name.

Early life and background

She comes from Etobicoke, in Toronto, Canada. As a teenager, she listens to Britney Spears, Hole, Marilyn Manson, Eminem and Insane Clown Posse, influences that sit alongside her later mix of pop, metal and rap references.

Dentata and the move into solo work

Before her solo career, she fronts Dentata, a female punk-metal band. The name refers to the folk tale of a man-eating vagina with teeth. The band breaks up in 2013. After that, she works as a stripper at a Toronto club, then moves into modelling before relocating to Los Angeles in 2017.

She later begins releasing music independently as Dana Dentata, presenting herself in opposition to male control and industry pressure. Her breakthrough track is “TND”, an abbreviation of “trust no dick”, which draws attention online and leads towards her debut release DANAVI$ION.

Career and releases

Her 2019 EP Daddy Loves You establishes her style and themes, including empowered sexuality, provocation and confrontational lyricism. The release includes “lil blood”, “4WD” and “D in the D”, and also the title track “Daddy Loves You”. The “lil blood” video is directed by Dana and takes inspiration from Fight Club. “4WD” continues her focus on sex-positive, femme-centred hip-hop, while “D in the D” and “Daddy Loves You” use darker imagery and role reversal.

Live work and profile

She opens for Marilyn Manson, performs at Rolling Loud and walks in London Fashion Week. These appearances place her across music and fashion scenes, alongside her recorded work.
