Dan Black

Dan Black is an electropop and alternative dance artist from Buckinghamshire, United Kingdom. Born in 1976, he is also described as a UK wonky pop artist and producer. He begins his career as a member of the alternative rock band The Servant and later also has links to Planet Funk.

Career

Black first gains attention with HYPNTZ, a mashup built from Notorious B.I.G.'s Hypnotize and Rihanna's Umbrella. He follows this with Symphonies, which combines elements of his own work and Rihanna's Umbrella. Symphonies helps broaden his profile in 2009 when the album track is selected as the US iTunes Store's Free Single of the Week and becomes a minor hit on American alternative radio. An alternate version of the track is also recorded with Kid Cudi for the North American pressing of ((un)).

Albums and releases

His debut album, ((un)), is first issued by Polydor in the UK in 2009. A US edition with bonus tracks appears on The Hours the following year. He is signed to The Hours Records.

Performances and recognition

Black tours extensively in the United States, including solo shows, a sold-out tour with Robyn and Kelis, and an appearance at Lollapalooza. The video for Symphonies, directed by Chic & Artistic, is nominated for two MTV Music Video Awards in 2010: Best Breakthrough Video and Best SFX.

Band history

Before his solo work, Black is a member of The Servant until the band splits in 2007.
