Dakh Daughters
Dakh Daughters is a Ukrainian music and theatre group formed in Kyïv in 2012. It is a seven-woman project associated with the Dakh theatre, from which the name is taken. The group is active from 2012 to the present and is identified with dark cabaret.
Style and performance
The group performs with a range of instruments and sings in several languages and dialects. Its work combines music and theatre, and it often draws on texts by well-known writers in its lyrics, including Taras Shevchenko, William Shakespeare, Serhiy Zhadan, Joseph Brodsky, Mykhaylo Semenko and Charles Bukowski.
Members and related projects
Among the members listed are Руслана Хазіпова and Соломія Мельник. Participants in the group also belong to other projects, including DakhaBrakha and Perkalaba.
Notable recordings and performances
Dakh Daughters gains wider recognition after releasing a video for “Rozy/Donbass”, which includes Shakespeare’s Sonnet 35 and Ukrainian folk songs. Another well-known clip shows a live performance on Maidan Nezalezhnosti in Kyiv during the early Euromaidan protests in December 2013. The group’s first studio album, If, contains nine tracks and is released in 2016.
