D-A-D
D-A-D is a Danish rock band formed in Copenhagen in the early 1980s. The group begins under the name Disneyland After Dark, a title conceived by Jesper Binzer and intended to suggest that anything can happen after dark in a place associated with a wholesome image. The band later shortens the name to D-A-D to avoid possible legal action from The Walt Disney Company.
Formation and early lineup
The original lineup includes Jesper Binzer, Stig Pedersen, Peter Lundholm Jensen and Stig Pedersen’s then-girlfriend Lene Glumer. The band plays its first performance at a youth club called Sundby Algaard. In December 1982, Glumer leaves, and the remaining three members continue. On 3 March 1984, Jesper Binzer’s younger brother Jacob Binzer joins during a concert at Musikcaféen in Copenhagen.
Albums and breakthrough
D-A-D releases its debut album, Call of the Wild, in 1986. The following year it issues D.A.D. Draws a Circle. Its international breakthrough comes with No Fuel Left for the Pilgrims in 1989 on Warner Records. That album marks the band’s fifth anniversary and includes “Sleeping My Day Away,” which gains international airplay.
Later releases and live activity
The band continues with Riskin' It All (1991), Helpyourselfish (1995), Simpatico (1997), Everything Glows (2000), Soft Dogs (2002), Scare Yourself (2005), Monster Philosophy (2008), DIC.NII.LAN.DAFT.ERD.ARK (2011), A Prayer for the Loud (2019) and Speed of Darkness (2024). One of its largest performances is as the opening act for Böhse Onkelz at the band’s farewell festival on 17 June 2005 at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz, where it plays to an audience of about 120,000.
