Cynthia is the stage name of Cynthia Bhikharie, an Hispanic-American freestyle singer of Puerto Rican descent. She begins her career at the age of sixteen, singing in a group with Sa-Fire, who later helps secure her an audition with a record producer. Two weeks after that audition, she signs to MicMac Records.
Career
Her first self-titled album establishes her as a freestyle artist, with the club tracks “Change On Me” and “Endless Nights” becoming notable hits in 1990. She follows it with Cynthia II, which also performs successfully. In 1992, she signs to Tommy Boy Records, after which her releases attract less attention and produce only a few minor club hits.
Style and context
Cynthia works in freestyle and Latin freestyle, with a pop-oriented club sound associated with the 1980s and early 1990s dance music scene.
