Currents

Currents are an American metalcore band from Newtown, Connecticut, active since 2012. The group develops a sound that sits within metalcore and progressive metalcore, with elements of deathcore, djent, death metal, heavy metal and progressive metal. Their music uses heavy riffs, breakdowns, djent-style guitars and melodic passages, and Brian Wille combines clean singing with screamed vocals.

Line-up

The band’s current line-up includes Brian Wille on vocals, Ryan Castaldi and Chris Wiseman on guitars, Christian Pulgarin on bass and backing vocals, and Matt Young on drums. Earlier in their history, Jeff Brown forms the band as drummer, and by 2018 none of the original members remain in the group.

Early releases and label history

Currents begin by releasing their debut EP Victimized independently in 2013. In 2015 they follow it with Life // Lost, which also comes out independently and includes a guest appearance from Ricky Armellino of This or the Apocalypse. At the start of 2017 they sign to SharpTone Records, which releases their debut album The Place I Feel Safest later that year. An instrumental version of the album appears in 2018.

Later albums and singles

In late 2018 the band releases the EP I Let the Devil In through SharpTone Records, again with an instrumental version. Their second album, The Way it Ends, arrives in 2020 and receives positive reviews. The album also gets an instrumental edition in 2021. In 2022 and 2023 the band issues a series of singles including “The Death We Seek,” “Vengeance,” “Remember Me” and “So Alone,” before releasing the album The Death We Seek through SharpTone Records.

Currents are described as a metalcore and progressive metal band with djent influence. Their work is also placed within progressive metalcore and deathcore, and their broader style is associated with tightly structured riffing and a contrast between harsh and clean vocals. The band’s second album is noted positively by critics, and one review singles them out as a band that stands out in a crowded modern metalcore scene.
