Cult of Luna
Cult of Luna is a Swedish post-metal group from Umeå, formed in 1998 by guitarist and vocalist Johannes Persson and vocalist Klas Rydberg after the breakup of the hardcore band Eclipse. The group begins with a sludge metal base and develops over time into a sound that combines post-rock, progressive metal, doom metal and atmospheric sludge metal, with long song structures and extended albums becoming a defining feature of its work.
Formation and early line-up
The first line-up includes Klas Rydberg, Johannes Persson, Magnus Lindberg, Erik Olofsson and Fredrik Renström. Renström leaves after a short period. As the group starts to widen its sound, Lindberg moves from drums to electronics, Marco Hildén joins on drums and Axel Stattin becomes the bass player. Andreas Johansson later replaces Stattin on bass.
Recorded output and label history
After a two-track demo in January 1999, the group releases its first split vinyl with Switchblade through Trust No One Recordings. Its debut full-length, Cult of Luna, appears on Rage of Achilles, followed by a two-track 7-inch on Hydra Head Records. Earache Records later signs the group and releases The Beyond, Salvation and Somewhere Along the Highway. The band later releases material on its own label, Red Creek.
The self-titled debut is heavily rooted in aggressive sludge and doom metal, with guttural vocals and sparse electronics used mainly for atmosphere. The Beyond keeps a similarly heavy approach but adds more progressive touches and a broader dynamic range. Salvation marks a major shift towards post-rock structures, more prominent keyboards and electronics, and clean vocals, while Somewhere Along the Highway expands that approach and becomes the group’s breakthrough release.
Later development
Eternal Kingdom appears in 2008, and the group later reveals that the story behind the album’s supposed diary concept is fabricated, with the related book version issued as Eviga riket. Vertikal follows in 2013, with Johannes Persson taking over vocals and lyric writing. The same year, the companion EP Vertikal II appears. Mariner, released in 2016, is a collaboration with vocalist Julie Christmas. A Dawn to Fear follows in 2019, then the EP The Raging River in 2021, and The Long Road North in 2022.
Membership and live line-up
Over time the group includes Marco Hildén, Axel Stattin, Andreas Johansson, Thomas Hedlund, Anders Teglund and Fredrik Kihlberg, alongside the founding members. Kihlberg joins on percussion and clean vocals. Hedlund later replaces Hildén on drums, while Teglund becomes a permanent keyboard player. The current member list also includes Kristian Karlsson.
Style
Cult of Luna is associated with long-form, dense compositions and a sound that moves from traditional sludge and doom metal towards more expansive post-metal and post-rock arrangements. The group’s recordings are often described as distinct from one another while remaining recognisably its own project.
