Culprate

Culprate is the stage name of John Hislop, a British electronic music producer from Bristol. His work spans IDM and dubstep, and he is also associated with electronic, electronica and experimental music.

Early releases and scene presence

He establishes his profile in the UK dubstep scene through EPs released between 2010 and 2013 on Dubsaw Recordings and Inspected Records. His music during this period sits within dubstep and related bass-music styles, including neurohop, neurofunk and future garage.

Open Outlets and later direction

From around 2014, his music begins to draw on experimental rock influences, with Radiohead and Pink Floyd among the named reference points. To release this material, he founds the label Open Outlets. It initially serves as a home for his own releases, and from 2017 it also includes other artists on its roster.

Albums and ongoing work

His albums Colours and Deliverance are identified as important reference points in his catalogue. A crowdfunding campaign is later launched for a new album intended as a spiritual successor to those records. By 2022, he states that the album is finished, although it remains unreleased at that point.
