Cruush

Cruush is a Manchester-based band led by vocalist and frontperson Amber Warren. The group works in shoegaze, dream pop, indie, indie pop and rock, with a sound built around melodic vocals, heavy guitar texture and a dense, distorted edge.

Formation and members

Cruush begins when Warren and guitarist Arthur Boyd meet at a “shitty Fresher’s event” and start writing and rehearsing together in Warren’s room. Drummer Fotis Kalantzis joins next, followed later by bassist Ru Cowl. The group is based in Manchester.

Style and sound

The band’s music combines dreamlike, dark vocal lines with elliptical guitar work and thick, shifting textures. Their songs are described through contrasting images of sweetness and abrasion, with a melodic surface set against industrial noise, grungy instability and drone-like atmosphere. The result is a form of shoegaze that repackages the style for a digital-era audience.

Recognition and label

Cruush are signed to Heist or Hit, the independent label associated with artists including Her’s, Eades and Pizzagirl. Their music draws support from BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio 6, Radio X, Soho Radio, Consequence of Sound, NME, The Line of Best Fit and Clash, with Jack Saunders and John Kennedy among the broadcasters named as fans.
