Crowhurst

Crowhurst is a Los Angeles-based group active since 2011. The project begins as an experimental noise act and develops into a wide-ranging body of work that includes black metal, doom metal, dark ambient, drone, harsh noise and power electronics.

Origins and line-up

The project is founded in Philadelphia in 2011 and is led by Jay Gambit. Its work is often built around collaboration, both in live settings and remotely. The group is currently associated with Andrew Curtis-Brignell and Sean Clintonov.

Style and output

Crowhurst starts with noise-based material centred on textural compositions and intense soundscapes, then moves across black metal and doom metal as well as more ambient and drone-led forms. The project releases more than 75 albums in total, and its entire discography is available to stream and download.

Releases and collaborations

In 2015, vinyl reissues of the sold-out Chondritic Sound cassette Aghoree and Memory Loss appear through Sol Y Nieve Records. Later that year, No Life To Live is remastered by Steve Austin of Today Is the Day. Also in 2015, Gambit and collaborators release I, an album engineered and produced by Jack Shirley, known for work with Deafheaven and Punch, which marks a shift away from the project’s more noise-focused material.

The follow-up II appears in 2016, written with members of Caina and Aevangelist and produced by Keith Souza and Seth Manchester at Machines With Magnets. In 2019, III is produced by Kurt Ballou.

Live activity and reception

Crowhurst appears at a series of festivals around the release of III, including Austin Terror Fest, Damnation Festival, Prophecy Fest NYC, Days Of Darkness, Steel Warriors Rebellion and two sets at a sold-out Roadburn Festival. The project is also noted by outlets including The Needle Drop, Vice, PopMatters, Revolver, Decibel and Metal Hammer.

Collaborators

Among many collaborators, Crowhurst works with Gary Mundy of Skullflower and Ramleh, Gnaw Their Tongues and Eugene Robinson of Oxbow.

Label

The project is associated with Prophecy Productions.
