Cro-Mags

Cro-Mags are a New York hardcore punk and metal group formed in New York, United States, in 1982 and active since then in various lineups. They are associated with crossover thrash, hardcore punk, metal, punk and thrash metal, and are known as one of the early bands to combine hardcore punk with heavy metal and thrash metal.

Early history

The band develops a strong cult following and is linked to the emergence of a tougher attitude in hardcore during the late 1980s. It is also among the first bands associated with the Hare Krishna movement. Its early demo includes songs that later appear on the debut album The Age of Quarrel, released in 1986.

Albums and line-up changes

The Age of Quarrel is regarded as one of the group’s most influential records. The band then releases Best Wishes in 1989, a more heavy metal-oriented album that alienates some of its audience. Alpha Omega follows in 1992, with John Joseph returning and Parris Mitchell Mayhew leaving. The record is followed by Near Death Experience in 1993, after which the group disbands for a period amid frequent line-up changes and break-ups.

Later activity

In 2000, Cro-Mags release Revenge, which returns closer to the sound of the early material while also including some more melodic punk rock elements. The band breaks up again after that release, and the long-running tensions within the group, especially between Parris Mitchell Mayhew and Harley Flanagan, remain unresolved.

Named members associated with the group include Harley Flanagan, John Joseph, Parris Mitchell Mayhew, Mackie Jayson, Gabby Abularach, Dave DiCenso, Dave Hahn, Peter Hines, Doug Holland, Joseph Affe and Franklin Rhi.
