Cradle of Filth

Cradle of Filth are an English extreme metal group from Ipswich, United Kingdom, active since 1991. Their line-up changes frequently, with Dani Filth as the only constant member. The band’s music develops from early black metal influences into a blend of gothic metal, symphonic black metal and other metal styles.

Style and imagery

Their lyrics and visual presentation draw on Gothic literature, poetry, mythology and horror films. The band’s imagery sometimes leads to associations with Satanic themes, although references to Satanism in the lyrics are limited and generally treated as aesthetic rather than ideological. Over time, the group also includes members from several countries.

Early recordings and first albums

Cradle of Filth records three demos in its early years: Invoking the Unclean, Orgiastic Pleasures Foul and Total Fucking Darkness. An unreleased album, Goetia, is recorded before the third demo but is later lost after the label involved ceases operations.

The band signs to Cacophonous Records and releases its debut album, The Principle of Evil Made Flesh, in 1994. After disputes with the label, including legal action, the group re-records material intended for a second album and issues the EP V Empire or Dark Faerytales in Phallustein to fulfil contractual obligations. It then signs to Music for Nations.

Expansion of its sound

Dusk... and Her Embrace appears in 1996 as a reworked version of earlier material and brings a more refined production and compositional approach. During this period, the band’s live shows become more theatrical, and some merchandise designs attract controversy.

Cruelty and the Beast follows in 1998 as a concept album based on Elizabeth Báthory. It features narration by actress Ingrid Pitt and leads to the band’s first performances in the United States. The EP From the Cradle to Enslave follows, with its video later included on the DVD PanDaemonAeon.

2000s releases

Midian arrives in 2000 and takes inspiration from Clive Barker’s novel Cabal and its film adaptation Nightbreed. Doug Bradley, known for playing Pinhead in the Hellraiser films, provides narration. The track Her Ghost in the Fog receives airplay on music television, appears on the soundtrack to Ginger Snaps and later features in the video game Brütal Legend.

After signing to Sony Music, the band issues Bitter Suites to Succubi, a release of new material, re-recordings and covers, including No Time to Cry by The Sisters of Mercy. It also releases the compilation Lovecraft & Witch Hearts and the live album Live Bait for the Dead.

Damnation and a Day appears in 2003 with orchestral arrangements performed by the Budapest Film Orchestra and choir. It combines material based on John Milton’s Paradise Lost with standalone songs. The band then moves to Roadrunner Records and releases Nymphetamine in 2004; its title track is nominated for a Grammy Award.

Thornography follows in 2006 and includes a cover of Temptation by Heaven 17. In 2008, Godspeed on the Devil’s Thunder, a concept album about Gilles de Rais, receives generally positive critical response.

Later releases and label changes

The band ends its relationship with Roadrunner Records and signs to Peaceville Records in 2010. That year it releases Darkly, Darkly, Venus Aversa. The EP Evermore Darkly follows in 2011, along with the orchestral compilation Midnight in the Labyrinth in 2012 and The Manticore and Other Horrors later that year.

In 2014, Cradle of Filth signs to Nuclear Blast Records. After line-up changes, it releases Hammer of the Witches in 2015 and Cryptoriana – The Seductiveness of Decay in 2017. Existence Is Futile follows in 2021. The band signs to Napalm Records in 2022.

Recent activity

In 2023, Cradle of Filth releases the live album Trouble and Their Double Lives, which includes new studio tracks such as She Is a Fire. Its fourteenth studio album, The Screaming of the Valkyries, appears in 2025. The group’s recent line-up changes include the departures of Zoë Marie Federoff and Marek “Ashok” Šmerda during a tour.

Live profile and recognition

The band gains wider attention beyond the underground metal scene through coverage in music publications, appearances on MTV and festival performances including Ozzfest, Download Festival and Sziget Festival. Dani Filth is nominated in the Suffolk Icons campaign in 2010 but is not included in the final selection.
