Cosima

Cosima is a London singer, songwriter and producer. Born and raised in Peckham in South East London, she has Cuban, German and Italian heritage, was home schooled and is self taught. She develops her own music and visuals, and has a background in architecture, which she later shifts towards designing sonic treatments for spaces including sound studios.

Music and style

As a solo artist, Cosima describes her work as “widow pop”, a form of music that looks back to the past while also reaching towards the future. Her singing is associated with an intimate, distant quality, and her material sits across pop, soul and R&B with an electronic edge.

Projects and collaborations

Cosima is widely known as one half of Raze de Soare, linked with Future Nuggets. She is also a founding member of Queer Night, an itinerant party series that engages local LGBTQ+ communities, and part of Corp., a Bucharest platform supporting and promoting female and female-identified musical talent.

Her track “Ploaia” is co-composed and produced by Ion Dumitrescu, who also runs the Future Nuggets label. On the other side, she works with Horațiu Șerbănescu, who records as Plevna and appears on the Future Nuggets roster.

Early songs

Her debut song, “Had To Feel Something”, receives praise for its brooding electro-soul sound. Another early track, “Girls Who Get Ready”, combines a pop arrangement with themes around mainstream ideas of female desirability and the experience of getting ready to go out with friends.

Voice and influences

Cosima finds her singing voice while staying with her grandparents in rural Germany, where she meets a classical singing teacher who helps her develop it. Her influences extend beyond her immediate surroundings through her family background and the different places that shape her musical outlook.
