Cookie Monsta

Cookie Monsta is the alias of Tony Cook, a dubstep producer and DJ from Nottingham, United Kingdom. His work is associated with dance, deathstep, dub, dubstep and electronic music, and he is known for a loud, grimy approach to dubstep.

Style and early development

As a child, Tony Cook spends time making sounds on Music 2000 on his brother’s PlayStation. He later studies music technology at college, where he learns Reason software. He is drawn to the dirtier side of music across genres, and hearing Rusko’s FabricLive 37 makes him interested in dubstep. He then begins making dubstep-style tracks and grime-influenced beats.

Career

Cookie Monsta first performs publicly at a college end-of-year gig, an experience that leads him to focus seriously on music. His sound attracts interest through its heavy basslines, harsh drums and distorted synths. He connects with Flux Pavilion, who invites him to join Circus Records. His first release on the label is Ginger Pubes / Blurgh!

He also remixes Taio Cruz’s Dirty Picture featuring Ke$ha, turning the pop track into a heavier dubstep version with his bass-driven style. Other releases include Fat Girl Rodeo on Circus Records’ Beats and Pieces EP, along with remixes such as Supafly on Hard2Beat Records. He later appears on the Circus Records Takeover on GetDarker TV, which is his first public DJ set.

Recognition and legacy

Ginger Pubes becomes widely played in dance spaces, and Cookie Monsta goes on to DJ internationally. He dies in 2020.
