Contention

Contention is a hardcore and edge metal group from Norway, formed in Oslo in 1991. It operates as a side project and includes members connected with Gain, Onward, Rectify, Amulet and Sportswear. The band plays live regularly in the Oslo area during the mid-1990s and supports acts including Earth Crisis, Unsane and The Offspring.

Style and themes

The group is not a straight edge band, although some members are straight edge. It has a strong animal rights position, which appears in the song “Undefended”.

Releases and recordings

Contention releases a split seven-inch with Lash Out in early 1994 and contributes two tracks to the Norway Hardcore compilation tape issued by Resource Productions. In 1995 the band records an eight-song LP for Stormstrike Records, but the album is not released. The recording circulates on dubbed tapes in the Norwegian scene, and Borderline Records later issues four of those songs as the seven-inch EP Monument.

Later history

The band plays its last show in 1997.
