Compa is a music producer and DJ from Manchester, UK, born in 1990, working in dubstep, electronic music, grime, bass and hardcore.

Overview

He emerges from the Manchester dubstep scene and makes music that combines a sense of classic sound-system tradition with a more forward-looking approach. His productions use spacious textures, heavy low frequencies and minimal arrangement, and they are described as balancing older dubstep foundations with newer ideas.

Releases and labels

Compa first appears on Get Darker TV in March 2011. He then releases his first 12-inch single on Boka Records, one of the early dubstep labels, with the tracks Sentence and Beginning. He also releases a bootleg of Mavado’s Dem A Talk, which sells out worldwide within a week. He later signs to Mala’s Deep Medi label.

Reception and support

His music receives support from figures including Gilles Peterson, Nerm, J:Kenzo and B-Traits, as well as Jay 5ive and N-Type on Rinse FM. His tracks also reach the record bags of Mala, Chase & Status and Joe Nice.

Performances and radio

Compa performs in the Netherlands, Croatia, Belgium, Russia, Portugal, Germany, the Czech Republic, Turkey, Poland and Greece. He also tours Sweden and North America from 2012. Alongside studio work, he presents a live show on Sub FM every other Monday from 12pm to 2pm GMT.
