Commoner

Commoner is a name used by several different acts, including a four-piece rock band from Salt Lake City, a shoegaze and grungegaze band from Tucson, Arizona, and an experimental one-person project based in Australia. It also refers to an experimental-hardcore band from San Diego, a US dub, ska and punk group, and a heavy metal and doom act from Norwich, England.

Australia-based experimental project

The Australian Commoner project makes experimental music shaped by drone, psychedelic and noise influences, along with other genres. Its pieces are generally built from successive layers of improvisation. Guitar is often central to the sound, with extensive use of signal processing and other sound manipulation techniques. Other acoustic and electric instruments also appear in some tracks.

Other acts using the name

The Salt Lake City version of Commoner is a four-piece rock band that combines harmony-led writing with heavy riffs and draws on post-rock, post-metal and post-hardcore. Another Commoner is a now inactive US band associated with dub, ska and punk. The Norwich group plays heavy metal and doom and has releases on Bandcamp.
