Colour
Colour is a British math rock band from the United Kingdom. The group starts out in Kingston and is active until 2009. It begins as a four-piece math pop act, with vocalist and guitarist Alan Welsh and guitarist George Reid meeting at college in Kingston, in the London suburb of the same name. The band develops a detailed, harmony-heavy style built around changing time signatures and tempo shifts, and it becomes associated with the wider British math rock and indie scene.
Formation and line-up
The band’s name starts out as Color before it settles on Colour. Its line-up does not stabilise until February 2008, after a long search for a bass player. By then Lewis Reynolds joins the band, having previously played in Meet Me In St. Louis, a group the other members already admire. The verified line-up lists Sean Bamberger, George Reid, Lewis Reynolds, James Trood and Alan Welsh.
Sound and activity
Colour’s music is described as math pop with a strong experimental edge, combining intricate guitar work, harmonies and shifting rhythms. Their hometown shows in Kingston attract growing audiences, and the band develops its material over several years of writing, rehearsal and teenage gigs. The band is linked with other Big Scary Monsters-associated groups such as Tubelord and Blakfish.
Releases
Colour releases three EPs: Color, issued while the band still uses the earlier spelling of its name, Conversations and Over The Moon. It also issues the singles Chutes and Unicorns.
After the band
After Colour ends, Alan Welsh appears again with Tubelord for their 2010 autumn tour. Welsh and James Trood also perform together in Tangled Hair.
