CoEx is the recording project of Klaus Vormehr, an electronic musician from Ireland who has worked on his own style of music since the early 1990s. His sound draws on minimalist composition, West African polyrhythms, dub reggae, afrobeat and art rock, and it sits between sequenced music and live improvisation.
Early releases and style
Vormehr’s work first appears on two self-titled records in the 1990s, followed by the albums Synaesthesia and Ascents Meteora in 1994 and 1996. These releases reflect his interest in melodic electronic music shaped by minimalist composers such as Steve Reich and by rhythmic influences from West Africa.
Musical background
He studies Afro-Brazilian percussion for several years and later teaches percussion programmes around Ireland. Before the CoEx release on tonAtom, he has already worked with several well-known acts in the music industry.
Later activity
CoEx returns in 2012 with the release of No Babble on tonAtom, a label debut for the project and its first release on any netlabel. The project also adds an Irish artist to the tonAtom catalogue.
