Citizen

Citizen is an American alternative rock band associated with the emo, pop punk, melodic hardcore, punk and post-hardcore scenes. The group is active from 2004 and is based in Southeast Michigan and Northwest Ohio, despite a separate listing that identifies a grindcore band from Santa Cruz.

Line-up and activity

The band’s current line-up consists of Mat Kerekes on vocals, brothers Nick Hamm on lead guitar and Eric Hamm on bass, Mason Mercer on rhythm guitar, and Ben Russin on drums. Citizen works as a group rather than a solo project.

Releases and label

Citizen is signed to Run for Cover Records. The band releases five studio albums: Youth, Everybody Is Going to Heaven, As You Please, Life in Your Glass World, and Calling the Dogs.

Style and scene

The band is considered part of emo’s fourth wave. Pitchfork describes Citizen as a band that listeners can grow with rather than outgrow, reflecting its position within a later generation of emo-influenced rock.
