Circle Takes the Square
Circle Takes the Square are an experimental hardcore punk and screamo group from Savannah, United States. They form in 2001 as a four-piece and are active from 2000 to the present. The band is often abbreviated to CTTS.
Line-up
The group includes Jay Wynne, Kathy Coppola, Drew Speziale, Bobby Scandiffio and Caleb Collins. In the band’s early configuration, it has a four-piece line-up, and after the first two releases one guitarist leaves and another joins in late 2004. Named members in the group’s history include Kathy Coppola on bass and vocals, Caleb Collins on drums, Drew Speziale on vocals and guitar, and David Rabitor on guitar and backing vocals.
Style and sound
Circle Takes the Square are noted for harsh male and female screaming vocals that often work in call and response. Their songs use chaotic drumming and highly technical bass and guitar work, which sets them apart from many other screamo acts. Their writing also uses varied song structures, moving from meditative, droning introductions to heavy choruses.
Releases and activity
The band tours the UK in mid-2004. Their album As the Roots Undo appears in 2004, and they later release the long-awaited follow-up Decompositions - Vol I in December 2012. A digital EP, Decompositions - Vol I, Chapter 1: Rites of Initiation, appears on the band’s Bandcamp page in 2011.
