Cimarrón

Cimarrón is a Uruguayan heavy metal band from Salto, active since 1998. It is a group rather than a solo project, and its listed genre is heavy metal, also described more broadly as metal.

The name Cimarrón is also used by a Colombian musical group associated with joropo from the Llanos region of Venezuela and Colombia. That ensemble is founded in 2000 by singer Ana Veydó and harpist Carlos “Cuco” Rojas, and its music combines Latin, Andalusian, Indigenous American and African elements.

Instrumentation and style

The Colombian group’s arrangements use instruments such as the cuatro, harp, maracas and Peruvian-flamenco cajón. Its music is rooted in the cultural traditions of the Orinoco region and presents joropo in a festive dance format.

Recordings and recognition

Its discography includes albums such as Sí, soy llanero: Joropo Music from the Orinoco Plains of Colombia and Orinoco, both noted for critical attention and award nominations. The group also receives Grammy nominations and performs at international festivals and venues. It collaborates with other Colombian artists and appears in music projects beyond its own albums.

Later history

Carlos “Cuco” Rojas dies in 2020, after which Ana Veydó leads the group.
