Christian Scott is a New Orleans-born American jazz trumpeter, born in 1983. He works in contemporary jazz, jazz, nu jazz and post-bop, and is associated with Stretch Music Publishing. He is also a member of R+R=NOW.
Career
Scott’s debut album, Rewind That, is released on Concord in 2005 and receives strong critical response. The record includes nine of his original compositions, along with his interpretation of Miles Davis’s So What and Donald Harrison’s Paradise Found. His work is described as combining traditional jazz melody and soloing with a broader tonal approach that draws on rock-influenced guitar textures.
Playing style and influences
Scott’s trumpet playing is shaped by a controlled, sparse note choice, and his sound is linked to a breathing technique he uses to produce his tone. Miles Davis is one of his major influences and is cited by Scott as the greatest of them all. His rhythm section on Rewind That features brothers Zaccai Curtis on piano and keyboard, Luques Curtis on bass, and drummer Thomas Pridgen, with Matt Stevens on guitar.
