Chris Duckenfield is a UK DJ and producer whose work is associated with house, electronic music and the Sheffield club scene. He begins DJing in 1989, after first being drawn into dance music through early hip hop and electro, and later through the illegal party culture in Sheffield in the late 1980s. He cites the Forgemasters DJs as an important part of his musical education and aims to play the kind of music he hears outside his home town alongside the Sheffield sound.

Early DJ work in Sheffield

Duckenfield’s first residency is at the Limit club in Sheffield. The night grows rapidly in attendance, moving from 150 people to 1,200 within three weeks and becoming a notable event in the local scene. He also plays guest slots, supports DJ tours with Warp and Phono, and takes on various residencies before moving further into studio work.

Alongside DJing, he works as a dance buyer in Warp’s record shop for five years, giving him close contact with the label and its wider musical network.

Recordings and labels

Duckenfield begins releasing his own music in 1991, first on the Warp-affiliated Nucleus label and later on Warp itself. He later founds the Primitive label, which becomes a home for his own releases, recordings with Richard Brown, and work by local artists after the Warp shop closes in the late 1990s. He also starts the Odori label to issue more house-oriented tracks.

RAC, SWAG and collaboration with Richard Brown

The RAC project is well received and leads to Duckenfield meeting Richard Brown. The two continue working together and develop the SWAG project, which becomes his longest-running collaboration. Their first four releases for Junior Boy's Own and its Jus' Trax subsidiary achieve strong club success.

SWAG release their debut album Felony Funk on their Version Music imprint in 1998. Duckenfield and Brown also record more than 30 releases together and produce remixes for artists including Bjork, Ian Pooley, Herbert and Blaze.

Live and DJ performances

Duckenfield performs SWAG live and as a DJ in clubs in cities including Tokyo and Madrid, as well as at UK events such as Basics and the Sub Club. His DJ style is described through the music he chooses: house and electronic grooves played with a strong rhythmic feel.
