Chris Conway

Chris Conway is a musician and performer associated with new age, jazz, folk and filk. He is from Michigan and Leicester, and builds his career in Leicester, UK. His work spans acoustic songwriting, jazz piano and singing, world fusion, ambient and new age recording, theremin performance, Celtic music and filk.

Musical activity

Conway works across a wide range of instruments and styles. He performs on piano, keyboards, nine-string acoustic and electric guitars, low, tin and twin whistles, live electronics, kalimba, theremin, zither and vocals. His output includes singer-songwriter material, jazz, world fusion, ambient, new age, Celtic, electronic and filk music.

Collaborations and ensembles

He has worked with musicians from several different scenes, including members of Jethro Tull and Fairport Convention, and he tours with Peter Tork. He also collaborates with composer Gavin Bryars, new age artists Llewellyn and Juliana, tabla player Talvin Singh, violinist Dr L. Subramanium and folk singer Martin Carthy. Other collaborators named in his work include Martin Barre, Maartin Allcock, Clive Bunker, Vikki Clayton, Ithamara Koorax, Derek Bailey, Sakari Kukko, Pete Morton, Thiago de Mello, Ramesh Mishra, Martin Speake, Sally Barker, Partho Sarathi Mukherjee, James Lee Stanley, Cathy Lesurf, Kevin Kendle, Tommy Emmanuel, Baluji Shrivastav, Andy Sheppard and Guy Barker.

He records with and belongs to The Rain Garden and Govannen. He also makes five recordings with sitar player Baluji Shrivastav in the Jazz Orient and Re-Orient bands.

Recordings and recognition

Conway has released more than 50 CDs under his own name and with his bands. His relaxation album Ayurveda sells more than 10,000 copies worldwide. His music is heard on UK national television, radio and in film. Songs written by him are also recorded by Ithamara Koorax and Vikki Clayton.

Live work

He has opened for Bob Geldof, Richie Havens, Roy Wood, Joan Baez, Country Joe McDonald, Jefferson Starship, Arthur Brown, Dean Friedman and Frances Black.
