Chip

Chip is an Atlanta rapper from the United States. He is also known as Chipmunk, the name under which he first builds his reputation in grime. He begins freestyling in youth clubs and on playgrounds, and by 11th grade he writes his first song, “My Life”.

Early grime career

As a teenager, Chipmunk is already regarded as one of the most promising names in grime. He records two mixtapes early on to show his style, and grime pioneer Wiley takes an interest in him, becoming his mentor and protégé. Wiley has previously played a similar role in the careers of Tinchy Stryder and Dizzee Rascal.

In 2007, he releases his third mixtape, League of My Own, on Alwayz Recordings. The project uses producers from Wiley’s network, including Bless Beats, Maniac, Balistiyx, Danny Weed, D’Va, Swindle and Skeams.

Awards, label move and crossover success

In 2008, after extensive touring and promotion, Chipmunk wins Best Newcomer at both the Urban Music Awards and the MOBO Awards. He also receives a nomination for Best New Rapper at the BET Awards, bringing him wider attention in the United States.

Shortly after his 18th birthday, he signs to Sony Columbia and begins moving away from grime towards mainstream hip-hop. During this period he works with Ironik on a rework of Elton John’s “Tiny Dancer”, which includes backing vocals from Elton John.

Mixtapes and debut album

In 2009, he releases the promo single “Chip Diddy Chip”, which reaches number 21 on the UK charts. He also makes Guess Who available as a free download before the release of his debut album, Diamond Rings.
