Charlotte Sometimes is the stage name of Jessica Charlotte Poland, a singer-songwriter from Wall Township, United States, associated with indie pop and alternative pop. She is based in New Jersey and is active as a solo artist.

Early life and background

Before moving into pop music, Charlotte Sometimes spends 13 years involved in dance until her early teens. She later stops dancing, partly because of pressure around thinness, and turns to songwriting and performance instead. She describes that change as leaving dance behind in order to make her own art rather than perform other people’s work.

Career

Her first release is a self-titled three-track EP in 2008. It includes the song “How I Could Just Kill a Man”, which becomes a breakout track and also appears on her debut album, Waves And The Both of Us. She releases that album in 2008.

In 2010 she independently releases the EP Sideways, which is made available digitally for free.

Name

The name Charlotte Sometimes comes from the 1969 children’s novel by Penelope Farmer. The story follows a girl named Charlotte who swaps places in time with another girl from 1918. Poland chooses the name partly because it reflects struggle with self-perception and how others see her.
