Charlo

Charlo is the stage name of Carlos José Pérez, a singer, musician, pianist, actor and composer from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Born in 1905 and dying in 1990, he works in tango and is associated with the Argentine guardia vieja tradition.

Career

His recording career begins in 1925 and runs to 1967. He records more than any other tango vocalist of his period, with most of his recordings concentrated between 1928 and 1931. In many of these performances he is regarded as reaching a level comparable to Carlos Gardel.

Style and composition

As a singer, Charlo helps establish an emotional but restrained style, marked by careful intonation and close attention to musicianship. As a composer, he shows a strong melodic gift and writes important pieces in the tango romanza style.
