Charlie Straight

Charlie Straight is a rock group from Třinec, Czechia. It is active from 2006 to 2013 and consists of Albert Černý and Michal Šupák. The band forms in August 2006 as a group of four schoolmates and develops a sound shaped by British pop and rock, with pop-alternative and Brit-pop influences.

Early development and recording

The group uploads its first demos online and is named band of the week by a Czech band database. After that recognition, the owner of the website becomes the band’s producer. With him, Charlie Straight records an album over the summer and autumn of 2007. Much of the mixing is handled by Dušan Neuwerth, who works with many international acts.

The debut album, She’s a Good Swimmer, is completed by spring 2009. The band also sets up a new website and prepares a booklet for the release.

Live activity and media appearances

Charlie Straight plays at major festivals in the Czech Republic, including Colours of Ostrava 2008 and Planet Festival. The group also appears several times on television, including on Noc s Andělem.

The band supports Kryštof, one of the major acts on the Czech music scene, in autumn 2008. A self-made video for the song “Shall We Have a Baby” wins the nationwide “Garážmistr” music video competition. Another video, for “Platonic Johny,” premieres at Chapeau Rouge in Prague, where the band draws the attention of the manager of Prague’s Hard Rock Cafe and is invited to perform there.
