Chaos UK

Chaos UK is a hardcore punk band from Bristol, United Kingdom, formed in 1979 and active from then to the present. The group’s music sits in hardcore punk, punk and street punk, and its lyrics often address unemployment, economic recession, drinking, infanticide, distrust of government, the police and authority in general.

Early releases and line-up changes

The band’s early period includes two 7-inch EPs released in 1982, contributions to the Punk and Disorderly, Riotous Assembly and UK/DK samplers, and a self-titled LP in 1983. The original line-up consists of Simon on vocals, Andy on guitar, Kaos on bass and Potts on drums. Across the years, the band goes through many line-ups, with Kaos described as the only consistent member in that period.

1980s recordings and notable members

The second LP, Short Sharp Shock, arrives in 1984. The Radioactive split LP follows in 1986 on Earache Records and introduces Extreme Noise Terror to a wider audience. That recording period features Mower on vocals, Gabba on guitar and Chuck on drums. This line-up becomes the band’s most hard-hitting and most productive, and it remains largely stable until the late 1980s and early 1990s, when Chuck leaves first and later Mower departs. Gabba and Kaos, now on vocals, remain at the core of the band.

Tours, collaborations and later activity

Chaos UK tours widely over a career of more than 20 years, including several Japanese tours. The first of these leads to the live album Live in Japan. The band plays with acts including Napalm Death, Extreme Noise Terror, Oi Polloi, The Exploited, Swingin' Utters and Misery, among others. By its own account, the group releases more than 20 LPs, EPs, singles, splits and live albums.

Associated projects and members

The members associated with Chaos UK include Chaos, Simon Greenham, Andy Farrier, Richard Potts, Nige, Chuck, Gabba, Mower, Beckie Chaos, Devilman, Victor Dominicis, Marvin Gauntlett, J. Cloth and Phill Thudd. After the group splits in 2007, members move on to other projects including A.D. Rice and the Wazzucks, FUK and Sick on the Bus.

Location and ongoing presence

Although the band is based in Bristol, it remains associated with the city and is described as still living there and drinking cider, which also appears as a recurring subject in several of its songs.
