Celadore

Celadore is an Australian power pop group with a melodic pop-rock sound that moves between brooding rock, subdued balladry and uplifting pop. The band forms in Melbourne and plays as a trio: guitarist and vocalist Michael Cooper, bassist Tom Ahmed and drummer David Noordhoff. Cooper and Ahmed have played together since their early teens in the local all-ages scene, and Noordhoff joins the group in 2009.

Debut release

The band records its debut EP, Distance Is A Gun, after completing the full line-up. The recording takes place in a coastal beach shack in South-East Victoria. The title track is the last song worked on before recording begins, and the EP is built around personal experiences and contrasts between bleak lyrics and upbeat melodic energy. A rough mix of the songs leads UK producer Chris Sheldon to mix the release at his East London studios.

Sound and influences

Celadore’s writing draws on melodic pop-rock and combines strong hooks with layered arrangements. The band cites influences including Crowded House, Motor Ace, Elliott Smith, Big Heavy Stuff and The Beatles. Their approach emphasises melody and dynamics, with songs that range from driving rock to quieter ballads.

Live activity and reception

The trio tours nationally and builds a live reputation through a series of shows across the country. An eye-catching video for Distance Is A Gun appears on music television outlets including Video Hits, Rage, Channel [V], Landed (Southern Cross) and SynTV, where it is named clip of the week. The single also receives radio support on RRR, PBS, SYNfm, Southern FM, Tune FM, 4ZZZ, Radio Adelaide and ThreeD Radio. Reviews describe the band as a melodic rock/pop act with strong dynamics and a capacity for both energetic songs and heartfelt ballads.
