Calyx is the drum and bass producer Larry Cons from London, United Kingdom, also known for work under the Calyx and Calyx & TeeBee names. His releases begin in 1998, and his background in music starts in early childhood. He studies five instruments from a young age and works across several genres, including jazz and funk, where he performs as a guitarist in a number of bands.

Background

Before focusing on drum and bass production, Calyx builds a wide musical background through projects in different styles. He plays guitar in various jazz and funk groups, including his own eight-piece band, Octane. This broader instrumental experience shapes his work as a producer and DJ in the drum and bass scene.

Releases and labels

Most of his music appears on Moving Shadow, which becomes the main home for his output. He also releases material on Metalheadz, V Recordings, Renegade Hardware, Subtitles, Violence Recs, Audio Couture, ill.skillz Recs, Intercom and Rugged Vinyl. In addition, he co-owns two labels: Thunderous Audio with Kontrol, and Momentum Music with TeeBee.

Albums and collaborations

His debut album, No Turning Back, appears on Moving Shadow and includes six solo tracks, four collaborations with TeeBee, Gridlok and ill.skillz, plus remixes by Dom & Roland and Hive & Gridlok. The album receives strong DJ support and leads to several represses in its first months of circulation. It is followed by extensive touring, including dates in the United States, Australia and across Europe.

In 2007, Calyx and TeeBee launch a new label with an album release built around their collaborations. Their album Anatomy appears on vinyl and CD and reaches the top of the sales charts for several weeks. The pair also work on a second collaborative album, intended to span drum and bass alongside a wider range of styles.

Performance style with TeeBee

Calyx and TeeBee develop a live setup using six to eight decks and two mixers, with both DJs performing at the same time. They first use this format at an event in Moscow in October 2007 and then perform it more than 30 times. They describe the approach as the most expressive way they have worked together and aim to use it for joint bookings.

Style and standing

His work sits in drum and bass and neurofunk, with a reputation built through releases on major scene labels and a substantial catalogue. The music is associated with the darker, technical side of the genre, and his collaborations and label work place him as a long-running figure in contemporary drum and bass.
