Caligula's Horse

Caligula's Horse is a progressive metal and progressive rock group from Brisbane, Australia. Formed in 2011, the band takes its name from the Roman emperor Caligula and his horse Incitatus. It begins as a project led by guitarist, songwriter and producer Sam Vallen, initially working with vocalist Jim Grey.

Early releases and formation

The band releases its digital debut, Moments From Ephemeral City, in April 2011. It is first intended as a studio-only project, but after the release Vallen and Grey begin assembling a live line-up. The early live band includes Geoff Irish on drums, Zac Greensill on guitar and Dave Couper on bass and vocals. In September 2011 the group also issues the Colossus EP, which contains two additional tracks. Live performances begin in October 2011.

Style and influences

Caligula's Horse works with an eclectic approach to songwriting, combining progressive song structures with instrumental skill while aiming for accessibility. Its influences include Devin Townsend, Pain Of Salvation, Opeth, Meshuggah, Porcupine Tree, Steve Vai, Frost, Periphery, Karnivool, Muse, Steely Dan, The Beatles and Frank Zappa.

Members

The group’s members are Jim Grey, Sam Vallen, Josh Griffin, Adrian Goleby and Dale Prinsse. Vallen is credited with guitar, programming, production and mixing, while Grey provides lead vocals.
