Cairo Son

Cairo Son is a London-based post-grunge stoner rock group led by singer-songwriter Magdy Abdel-Rehim. Abdel-Rehim is the only child of a Polish mother and Egyptian father, and he grows up in London after being educated at an international school. His early musical influences come from blues and rock on both sides of the Atlantic.

Formation and line-up

Abdel-Rehim begins his musical career as a sideman for other artists, where he develops his stagecraft and performance experience. He later moves into songwriting and develops the Cairo Son project on his own before forming the band as a trio with bass and drums. He sees the classic three-piece line-up as the only structure for this music.

Style and influences

The group’s sound draws on the flair and grit associated with Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin and AC/DC, while also reworking the metal sound those artists influence. Cairo Son is described as hard, riff-driven and lyrically direct, combining older rock and metal influences with a modern stoner rock approach.
