Cabaret Nocturne is the electronic project of Belgian producer Raphaël de Sauvage. He has worked under this name since 2013, after making music on the underground scene since 1996.

Style and output

Cabaret Nocturne makes fusions of 1980s pop, dark basslines and house rhythms. The project is associated with dark disco, synthpop, nu-disco and synth-pop, and de Sauvage describes the approach as non-formulaic. His sound is also described as part of the electronic slo-mo scene, with cyborg-like vocals and a darker club orientation.

Releases and labels

Since launching Cabaret Nocturne, de Sauvage releases music on a wide range of independent labels, including My Favorite Robot, Beachcoma, Nein, Factor City, Rotten City, Roam, Disque Discos and Join Our Club. He also signs with My Favorite Robot, Beachcoma and Nein.

Radio and podcast work

From 2001 to 2009, de Sauvage presents the Digitalk FM show on Vibration Radio. The programme features Belgian guests who later become known as The Magician, Mugwump, Kolombo and Aeroplane. He also runs a quarterly podcast called K7 Nocturne, which features exclusive and forthcoming tracks.

Recognition

Cabaret Nocturne receives press attention from publications including DJ Magazine, Mixmag and Tsugi, and support from radio stations such as KCRW in the United States and NTS in the UK. His track “Blind Trust” becomes his best-known release and gains more than 3 million views on YouTube. He also receives support from a wide range of DJs and producers, including Andrew Weatherall, Chloé, Cosmo Vitelli, Damian Lazarus, Daniele Baldelli, Dixon, Erol Alkan, Ewan Pearson, Fairmont, Ivan Smagghe, Jacques Renault, Jennifer Cardini, Job Jobse, Justin Robertson, Marek Hemmann, My Favorite Robot, Red Axes, The Hacker, Tim Sweeney and Trevor Jackson.

Persona

He presents the project while hiding behind a bowler hat, and continues to work independently outside the usual constraints of the music industry.
